Have you ever tried a Bible reading plan and walked away saying that it just didn’t work for you? Most of the reasons that people address why they struggle with Bible reading plans have been dealt with when this plan was created. The Chronological Cross-Reference Bible reading plan is more like doing a daily Bible Study than just reading through the Bible. It put the Old Testament in Chronological order so that you can see how the story of the Old Testament fits with the Psalms and the Prophets. Then it combines parallel New Testament passages with the Old Testament readings while being careful not to break the flow of the Books of the Bible. The result is a beautiful weaving together of Scripture that allows readers to see how the New Testament has fulfilled the Old.

The two-year plan takes less than 10 minutes to read each day, so you have plenty of time to dig deeper into what you read. This Bible reading plan comes in all sorts of forms: App, Online, Booklets, Printable PDFs, and Study Journals. If you are looking for extra study resources to go with your Bible reading, then this plan is for you. The app and study journal have daily open-ended questions and with the app, you will find several hundreds of maps and many videos including the ones from Bible Project. If all this isn’t enough, their app also has a built-in private group social network integrated into and prayer tools that are amazing. This plan comes highly recommended for anyone who wants to read the whole Bible.

If you are looking for Bible reading plans this is one is hard not to come across. M’Cheyne lived in the 1800’s and his reading plan has far outlived his short 29 years on the earth. It was greatly popularized by D.A. Carson the founder of the Gospel Coalition who has written companion books to go along with this reading plan. This Bible reading plan has two sets of readings for each day taking people through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the Old Testament once. Many times, the days reading might be from 4 different spots in the Bible and they often create connects between parallel passages. The only complaint that people tend to have doing this plan is if their time is tight, they often can’t do all the reading in one sitting and still have time to think about what they read. If you have time and like to read, this plan will give a good walk back and forth through the Bible each year.

Have you ever tried to read straight through the Bible and ended up stopping because it got hard to read the genealogies for days or prophecies against the nations around Israel? Well, this plan might be great for you. It is a one-year plan that breaks the Bible into several different Genres: Epistles, The Law, History, Psalms, Poetry, Prophecy, and Gospels. Each day of the week you read a different Genre. The method reading gives a lot of variety each week but it might not be for everyone. Since you are only reading a particular book of the Bible 1 day a week it takes 8 weeks to get through 1 Corinthians. This could make it difficult for some to follow the flow of Paul’s letter. However, for those who like variety and are good at tracking from week to week where they left off this reading plan could be a perfect fit. If you want to find something similar that accelerates this in 6 months, check this out: Through the Bible 6-month reading program.

It’s easy to have something come up in a week that makes you miss a day. Especially when you have small children. This plan has 5 days of reading for each week. The readings typically consist of an Old Testament text and a New Testament text. The OT reading is basically set in Chronological order and the NT reading is designed to spread the gospels out over the year. They have a convenient PDF that you can print off for free and a companion guide that you can purchase. Each year it gets updated to follow the new year’s dates. This plan brings a lot of popular plan features together into one package. The only thing that it could be missing is having the NT being in an order that correlates with the OT reading.

The result is a masterful weaving together of NT and OT reading that allows you to see the Bible in a whole new way. Since the books of the Bible are intact it makes it so that not every day can have a cross-reference, however, it is estimated that he still manages to get over 100 connections through the course of a year. The biggest challenge with this plan is it might be harder to find this year’s version of it. If you can’t find a link to the current year’s PDF here, then you will need to try to email Craig. His email address is usually on old versions of his plan.

When you hear Chronological Bible Reading plan you might think at first that they are all the same. But this is far from the truth. Some Chronological plans are made based on the order the books were written (Also known as Historical Bible Reading Plans). Other plans are ordered based on when events occurred. Still other chronological plans are hybrids that combine multiple different kinds of plans together. So what is the big deal about chronological and should you try one of these plans. If you have never read the Bible chronologically, it is worth it. Few things can help you understand how the Bible all fits together more than reading it chronologically. Reading prophesies in the context of the history which they are written grants a better understanding into what they are communicating. Likewise, reading Psalms in the context of who wrote them can give you much more understanding into the experience of the Psalmist while they wrote. The only real downside to some chronological Bible reading plans is that they can break books of the Bible into such small parts that you might lose flow of a particular book (this varies with different chronological plans).

When you take a long time (a year or two), to read the entire Bible you get the benefit of being able to dig deeper into the text, but if you don’t have the big picture down you might get lost in the weed or miss the forest in the trees. Reading the whole Bible in 90 days can help you get the big picture and once you have the big picture it can be good to dive deeper and checkout a slower paced reading plan. Lots of 90 day plans exist and you can find them in PDF, Printed Books, and some apps even have them.

By reading a proverb each day, you expose yourself to a wealth of timeless advice and insight from various cultures and eras. Secondly, proverbs often provide practical guidance for navigating life’s challenges. They offer simple but profound truths that can inspire and motivate us to make better choices and cultivate positive habits. Additionally, daily exposure to proverbs can improve language skills, expand vocabulary, and enhance critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, proverbs can serve as valuable reminders or prompts for self-reflection, encouraging personal growth and fostering a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. Ultimately, reading a proverb daily is a small but powerful practice that can significantly contribute to our overall well-being and personal development. This simple pdf allows you to check off each day as you read that day’s proverb. The pdf isn’t really necessary for this since you can really just follow your calendar days to do this too.

It includes three daily readings, each from different sections of the Bible. The first reading is taken from a Psalm, Proverb, or Ecclesiastes, providing wisdom and reflection. The second reading is from the New Testament, exploring the teachings and life of Jesus and the early Christian community. The third reading alternates between an Old Testament passage and a Gospel, creating a harmonious understanding of God’s teachings throughout history. By overlapping readings, such as pairing Hebrews with the Law and prophets with Revelation, the plan encourages a holistic understanding of God’s Word and its consistent message. If you are able to set aside the time to read the Bible through in 6 months you won’t regret it.

This plan simply gives you books of the Bible to read each month for the year. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, following a monthly reading plan can be beneficial. Instead of being overwhelmed by a daily checklist, this approach allows readers to immerse themselves in the flow of the text. By dividing the Bible into manageable portions for each month, readers can delve into the richness of the passages without feeling rushed or pressured to complete a specific amount each day. This method encourages reflection and contemplation, enabling individuals to fully absorb the profound messages and teachings within the scriptures. Without the need to constantly mark off their scheduled reading, readers may find themselves more engaged and appreciative of the journey they are undertaking through the Bible. This approach isn’t for everyone though because it does make it harder to know if you are on track for the month in your reading or if you are falling behind.

Firstly, these plans provide a structured and focused approach to studying the Word of God, allowing readers to systematically explore verses, stories, and teachings related to their chosen topic. This focused study helps to uncover connections, patterns, and deeper insights that may not be readily apparent in a more casual reading. Secondly, topical Bible reading plans enable readers to gain a broader perspective on a particular subject by examining relevant passages from both the Old and New Testaments. By exploring the Bible in this comprehensive manner, readers can gain a more holistic understanding of God’s wisdom and teachings surrounding their chosen topic. Lastly, these plans encourage personal application by providing opportunities for reflection, prayer, and practical application of the biblical principles and lessons encountered. I think these are available on Pinterest too, but I couldn’t figure out how to get the nicely formatted version shown in the pictures.

Where
to Start?

The
Bible is a book full of smaller books and letters, but it can be overwhelming
to know where to start. Fortunately, many Bible reading plans exist
that can help you navigate your daily reading. When looking for a
reading plan it is good to find one that supplies something from the new
testament and old testament to read each day. Reading from the old
testament can help you catch the broader picture of what God has been doing
since creation. Likewise, reading from the new testament will give
you valuable insight into our salvation and Jesus Christ. With so
many Bible reading plans out there what one should you choose?

How
much time do you have each day?

One
of the first decision that you make when finding a Bible reading plan is how
long do you want to read each day. Do you have 5 minutes or a couple
of hours? Most 1 year Bible reading plans require about 12 to 20mins
of reading each day. If you have an hour or more to spend with God
in your current season of life, you might consider choosing a 1 year Bible
reading plan. When choosing how long you can read, you need to
remember that you will also want to have time to pray and think/study about
what you are reading each day. 1 year Bible reading plans can help to give you
a good overview of the Bible, but if you have less than a 1 hour to spend with
God each day it will be easy to get behind in your reading and stop the plan
altogether. It might be good to consider a shorter reading plan that
takes you through a portion of the Bible or select a reading plan that is 2
years or more.

Short
VS Long Term Bible Reading Plan

Advantages can be found for both short and long term Bible reading plans. Short term Bible reading plans can help you jump all over the Bible quickly and long term Bible reading plans can help you find consistency over the long haul. Bible reading plans that only last a week or a couple of months are good, but they often leave you asking what to read next. If you are looking to consistently read the Bible every day then it might be good to consider a long term Bible reading plan. The key to picking a long term Bible study is to not choose one that locks you into the same kind of reading for weeks.

Historical
VS Topical VS Chronological

Historical
or canonical Bible reading plans are the more traditional way people have
tended to read the Bible. These plans use the historical order of
the books as they are found in the Bible. It is the equivalent of
opening the Bible and reading from the first page to the last or some portion
in between. The problem with these kinds of plans is that you
might spend a week reading nothing but genealogies. The typical
solution to this problem is topical or thematic reading plans (often in the
form of devotionals). However, reading select topics can polarize the Bible and
prevent you from having a full picture of God and what He has to
say. Another approach in the last couple of decades has been the
Chronological Bible reading plan. These types of plans arrange Bible
readings so that you experience events and prophecies in the order they took
place on a Bible timeline. This can be a great approach, but it can
make it so that you spend months reading stories from the Bible and then months
of reading deep spiritual instruction. So, what is
best? Well, probably a mix of all three of these.

Reading
Together

One
of the best things you can do in reading the Bible each day is to find someone
else who will do the same reading plan with you. Reading with
someone else will give you a connection point to talk to someone about what you
are reading and learning. In addition, you will also find someone
who will help motivate you to stay on track and catch up if you get
behind. One of the best ways to find someone to read with you is to
ask a family member or person that is part of your local
church. Most genuine Christians want to read the Bible every day and
are excited if someone wants to read with them, so be bold and ask…you won’t
regret it!

Where
to find Bible reading plans?

In the past, the only place to find a reading plan was in a printed Bible, but these days it is much easier. The internet is full of them and is only a google search away. In addition, many apps at both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store have Bible reading plans in them. Simply searching for “Bible Reading Plan” will give you a ton of options. My favorite Bible reading plan for long term daily Bible reading is Bible Study Together’s 2-year Chronological Cross-Reference reading plan. It combines the new and old testament into daily readings that are in the order of which events occurred but also enables you to read parallel passages to show you how the old testament is fulfilled in the new. They also have lots of resources wrapped around the plan. As a result, you can read this plan with an app, printed bible, or even daily journal with their workbook. Click here to get started with Bible Study Together!

What
is holding you back?

People
make excuses about reading the Bible like, “I don’t have any time” or “it’s too
confusing” or “it is too dry”. Please remember that daily reading
the Bible is not about checking off that you finished your spiritual duty for
the day. It is about communing with the risen Son of
God. Time in God’s word needs to be accompanied by prayer,
meditation/study, and fellowship with others reading the Bible. When
you see the value of daily being with Jesus, it will motivate you to carve out
the time. If the Bible is hard for you to understand there is likely
someone who would be excited to read and help you understand it (just be brave
and start asking). If God’s word feels dry to you, please take some
time in prayer for the next week just to ask God why you are more excited by
the things of this world than His truth. He might just take you on a
journey that will remove the hindrance and bring you into a much deeper place
with Him.

So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.9The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:10I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.11I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.12Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.13I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.14Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.15What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.16O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live.17Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.18For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.19The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.20The LORD was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.21For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.22Hezekiah also had said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?

2 Chronicles 32:24-31

24In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.25But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.26Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.27And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;28Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.29Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.30This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.31Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

2 Kings 20:12-19

12At that time Berodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.13And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and showed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah showed them not.14Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.15And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not showed them.16And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD.17Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.18And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.19Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?

Matthew 28:1-4

1In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

John 20:1-10

1The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.2Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.3Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.4So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.6Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,7And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.8Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.10Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

Luke 24:12
